Week 1 - Update

Due to individual commitments at the weekend (including a trip to Wisley for most of us) the group has been unable to meet in person. Instead, emails have passed back and forth and ideas have started to take shape. Here is an update from the weekend...

GROUP ORGANISATION - a range of tools have been utilised to aid sharing and discussion within the group (Blogger, Picasa, SkyDrive, etc).

BRAINSTORMING - took place in class on Wednesday afternoon. Initial ideas explored ways to increase the river’s presence throughout the site, current and future juxtapositions between Canary Wharf and Greenwich Peninsula, creating a new identity for the site, and finally, ways in which to increase connectivity.

SITE VISIT - Dimitrios, Leire, Marine and Rowan all met on site on Thursday, taking the afternoon to conduct a walking survey (recording thoughts, feeling and taking photos along the way). Zoe and Francesco were unable to attend as both currently out of the country. The group paused at the Thames Barrier Cafe, taking the opportunity to reflect on the walk and plan for the following tasks:

ZONES - the group felt there were distinct zones within the site, which could be used to help organise the following SWAT ANALYSIS in a logical manner. Marine put together the initial zone map in PhotoShop, using basic aerial photography as a base map.

Zone 1 (yellow) = Industrial West
Zone 2 (purple) = Cultural
Zone 3 (green) = Residential
Zone 4 (orange) = Industrial East

EYESORE-IT – is in progress. Site photos have been uploaded to Picasa in order to share and simulate ideas. Further discussion, as a group, will take place on Wednesday (including ideas for the presentation of Eyesore-it photos and captions).

SLOGAN - ideas have been passed back and forth via email. The group agree that the slogan should include the word Peninsula, as it is unique within this area of the Thames and easily remembered. A working list of potential slogans has been complied and circulated via email for group comment:

London's new Peninsula
Live on London's unique Peninsula / Greenwich Peninsula
Discover the Greenwich Peninsula
Community life on the Peninsula
Life on the arty Peninsula
At home on the Peninsula
At home along Greenwich Peninsula
Home is Greenwich Peninsula
Riverside living on the Peninsula
Riverside homes on Greenwich Peninsula
Rediscover the river along Greenwich Peninsula
Greenwich Peninsula live by the river
Living by the river on Greenwich Peninsula
Vibrant riverside living on Greenwich's artistic Peninsula
Live on London's unique peninsula / Greenwich peninsula
Be a part of London's precious peninsula / Greenwich peninsula
Good to be GREENwich Peninsula
GREEN outside, GREEN inside: GREENwich Peninsula

As a group, Live on London's unique Greenwich Peninsula, is currently considered the strongest slogan on the list. Dimitrios suggested adding green highlights to the slogan, communicating the ecological/sustainable theme of the project without the need for additional words. ‘Unique’ is our current working adjective, subject to review and change.

CONCEPT DIAGRAM – Leire found two interesting concept diagrams and distributed them around the group for discussion and inspiration. Draft concept diagrams will be discussed and developed further on Wednesday.
